Peaky Blinders is one of the first series I watched on Netflix in 2020. Recommended by a cinephile friend, I was still reluctant to start a long series as I get impatient and prefer to know the outcome of the plot without having to wait months on end. Yet here I was, on one of those sleepless nights, too tired from work to be able to read, and I look into this British drama to see if it would appeal to me. The storyline takes place in England, mostly in the town of Birmingham. While the Shelby boys, Arthur Jr., Thomas, John, and Fin, were away fighting in WWI, their aunt Polly took care of the businesses. Upon their return, Tommy, a very charismatic young man who doesn't flinch in taking up the family's leadership, nor mind crime when it's about moving up in the world, will take the reigns, assisted by aunt Polly, who remains the matriarch of the family and the businesses' treasurer. She and Thomas are quite close and in several instances, he leaves her in charge in his absence. Soon the gang expands into London as it does not want to be limited to Birmingham, which remains its stronghold and the place to fall back to. The show is often violent, and ongoing events exhibit an imbroglio of situations that will progressively be unraveled, only to be replaced with new complications. This narrative is made of an array of intrigue, betrayals, sabotage and power-seeking, and a lot of crime, and will keep you avidly waiting for the next level of the family's adventures. The long-awaited season 6 should be airing in 2022. Can't wait to watch it!
