I still remember school days when I would have cereals for breakfast only to starve 3 hours later... I used to wonder how come I was getting this hungry this fast after all? As I started developing my career within the F&B Marketing Field, I delved deeper into the cereal industry. And you might have guessed it. The secret was 'sugar'. Cereals are mostly filled with sugar/sweeteners, which is the key driver of hunger. This leads me to wonder: how is cereal then a healthy product??
Cereal has been branded as a healthy budget-friendly and filling breakfast. Is that true? My first findings showed that cereals do indeed contain lots of nutrients. Nonetheless, this wasn't enough for me. I had to dig deeper because having these amounts of sugar is quite dangerous in the long run. Think of diabetes or Alzheimer and you will get the drill. With the emergence of a health-conscious community, keeping cereals labeled as a portion of healthy food is becoming more of a challenge.
Next time you are purchasing cereals, look closer to the line stating "of which sugars". It is usually printed below carbohydrates. If this number is high, then you better go for something else. You might be wondering what can be a substitute. You can actually have traditional oatmeal, porridge with some fruits, and some almond milk. These foods will definitely make you feel fuller for a longer time and will serve your health much better!
