On February 4, 2000, the World Cancer Summit was held in Paris. The Charter signed at the Summit by French President Jacques Chirac and General Director of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura aimed at promoting research on cancer and improving patient services. World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) created in 1933. It aspires to raise awareness and reduce stigma by spreading information to the general public and by showing support to people suffering from cancer. Many events take place all over the continents.
