Tendon Healing Food

Friday, March 26, 2021

Anyone who knows me recognizes my very active lifestyle which includes playing tennis frequently. And we all are aware that tennis is a very demanding sport.

Back in 2016, while competing in a local tournament, I suffered one of the most frustrating injuries any athlete could ever face. It was the Achilles tendon rupture. The Achilles tendon is a tendon that links the ankle to the knee through the calf. I was lucky that the tear was actually partial so that surgery could be skipped. Nonetheless, I’ve struggled a lot with the recovery. I was in a cast for a total of 7 months and had to undergo several injections. And till today, this part of my body remains a weak point.

So recently, I decided to tackle the Achilles injury from a nutritional perspective. And I came to know that the magical ingredient for that was having bone broth! I can see you frowning, youuuuuk!! Bone broth? Sounds disgusting! Don’t worry, I had a very similar reaction as I didn’t feel well about having bone broth. But, as usual, the Blind Chef, my mom, is the biggest problem solver of all.

Before getting to the cooking part, let me tell you why bone broth is the go-to when it comes to tendon health. Bone broth is high in proline and glycine. Our bodies use these to connect tissues and this is what tendons are there for! They connect tissues. And other nutrients that ease or at least help with the prevention of tendinitis are packed with vitamin C and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Now that I have pointed out the benefits of bone broth, you might consider it from a healthy perspective. Let me give you a hint on how to consume bone broth while having something delicious. When I told my hero, the Blind Chef about the importance of this for my injury, she did not react. However, on the second day, lunch included boiled chicken breasts and boiled quinoa with lemon mustard sauce. So mom boiled the quinoa with the hot bone broth of the chicken while adding the lemon mustard treatment to it! I didn’t taste any difference and mom told me that bone broth was in the mix just after consuming my quinoa. Do you still have a reason to shy away from bone broth now?
