45 Things I Learned... 25

Wednesday, February 8, 2023

For as long as I can remember, my mind tries to find solutions, either by processing events logically and in a structured way, or by looking for missing pieces to a puzzle to complete the general picture. I am what they call a natural problem solver. I enjoy putting together Lego shapes, as long as I can make sense of the final outcome. Is that to say that I am an intellectual or just a smart/intelligent person? The difference between the 2 concepts is that they are not quite the same but somehow go hand in hand. Intelligence measures similarities and disparities and tries to bring them together into a new approach or perception. While intellect is based on putting facts and known information together to understand the reality one is experiencing. I have been told that I am smarter than knowledgeable, maybe because I do not boast about what I know and prefer to listen. It is true that I consider that I don't know much, which many of my friends dispute vehemently. I am sure of being very curious intellectually and that the human mind fascinates me among other topics. And so, exploring known factors and looking for common denominators or at least a direction to rationally analyze the emotional course of action at hand is required in order to grasp societal behavior. Because if life were only based on intellect, it would certainly be limited. Intelligence and feelings seem to be the purpose behind our paths.

Some quotes on the intellect:

The intellect of the wise is like glass. It admits the light of heaven and reflects it - Augustus Hare

Intellect is a magnitude of intensity, not a magnitude of extensity - Arthur Schopenhauer

Skill is the unified force of experience, intellect, and passion in their operation - John Ruskin

Skepticism is the chastity of the intellect - George Santayana

Intellect is a part of good faith. Intellect is the light, the heart is the direction - Tariq Ramadan

The very might of the human intellect reveals its limits - Sophie Swetchine

Thought is the labor of the intellect, reverie is its pleasure - Victor Hugo

In today's picture, we had stopped in Curitiba for the afternoon, and what better way to employ our spare time than to visit a museum? This was at the Novo Museum, also known as Niemeyer's Eye, and there happened to be a temporary exhibit that immediately caught my eye: a wooden frame made of several entrances and shelves with some books on them. I can't stop my intellectual curiosity and so I went in, checked the different publications, found an interesting one, although in Portuguese, sat myself comfortably on the cushion in the center, and did my best to understand that essay related to part of the Brazilian political history. And this was a happy moment for my brains because I was doing the effort to master a foreign language and at the same time discern the intended message 😊
