Our societies have not always clearly segregated the roles of men and women when it comes to science. For instance, in the Ancient World, women practiced medicine. However, over the centuries, men became more involved in health matters and combatting diseases. This did not prevent women from mastering herbalism in their homes / communities. And it wasn't until the 18th and 19th centuries, that women would be able to access universities. Becoming a scholar, which was not new, remained only available to those whose families could financially afford it. With the social changes in the 1900s and especially after World War II, many women who had undertook roles that were previously held by their male counterparts, chose to keep working in chemistry, engineering, genetics, mathematics, medicine and physics. This day is to remember the contributions to science and humankind.
