Elif Shafak is a renowned Turkish-British author and activist. She carries her Turkish roots "in her soul" and is an advocate of human rights and freedom of speech. She has been awarded several times, not only for her books but also for her pursuit of the promotion of gender equality.

This novel depicts two parallel stories. One contemporary tale of a 40-year old miserable married housewife, Ella Rubenstein, who takes a job to read and report on a novel written by Aziz Zahara on Shams of Tabriz's quest for Rumi and his transformation into a mystic and advocate for love. The other narrative takes place in the 13th century and is about Rumi encountering Shams, an unhappy, swirling dervish, whom he will change into an ardent and devoted poet.

This book delves into the Sufi way of life and most importantly about Love. Love, in its mysticism, is a concept that is part of the human, spiritual life. It has the power to remodel us and unleash our compassion, our connection to God and ourselves. Give it a read and let me know what you think 😁
